The fountain was built by Nicolò Salvi in 1735 under pope Clemente XII°, and decorated by various assistants of the Bernini. The left bas-relief shows Agrippa submitting the project of the aqueduct to August, while the right bas-relief shows the August soldiers' meeting with the virgin that shows them the source.

The legend says that a foreigner that launches a coin in the fountain behind his shoulders assures his return to Rome.
